How to Count Cards in Blackjack

Counting cards in blackjack can significantly increase your chances of winning. It’s not about memorizing every card dealt but rather keeping track of the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the deck. Here’s a simple guide to get you started.

Understanding the Basics

What is Card Counting?

Card counting is a strategy used in blackjack to determine whether the next hand is likely to give an advantage to the player or the dealer. By keeping a tally of certain cards as the dealer goes through the deck, players can strategize their bets accordingly.

The High-Low System

One of the most popular card counting methods is the High-Low system. In this strategy, cards are valued as follows:

  • High cards (10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace): -1
  • Low cards (2 through 6): +1
  • Neutral cards (7 through 9): 0

How to Count Cards

Step 1: Assign Values

As each card is revealed, assign it the appropriate value from the High-Low system. High cards subtract from the count because they’re favorable to the player and increase the chances of the dealer busting. Low cards add to the count, as they’re favorable to the dealer.

Step 2: Keep a Running Count

Use the values to maintain a “running count.” Start at 0 when the deck is shuffled and add or subtract for each card dealt. This number will fluctuate as the game progresses.

Step 3: Calculate the True Count

To increase accuracy, convert the running count into a “true count.” Divide the running count by the number of decks remaining. This gives a more accurate picture of which cards remain.

Step 4: Adjust Your Bets

When the true count is positive, odds are in your favor, so consider increasing your bet. When it’s negative, the dealer has the advantage, so it might be wise to bet less.

Practice Makes Perfect

Like any skill, practice is crucial. Start by practicing with a single deck, adding and subtracting as each card is revealed, and keeping your running count. Gradually, try to speed up and work with multiple decks.

Tips for Success

  • Stay Under the Radar: Casinos watch for card counters, so try to play naturally and avoid sudden jumps in your bet amounts.
  • Practice Regularly: The more you practice, the easier it will become to count cards without appearing to concentrate too hard.
  • Know Your Limits: Don’t let the counting strategy lead you to bet more than you can afford to lose.

Conclusion

Card counting in blackjack is a powerful tool, but it’s not foolproof. It requires practice, patience, and a good strategy for managing your bets. Remember, while counting cards is legal, casinos may ask you to leave if they suspect you’re doing it. Always play responsibly and enjoy the game.
